| Preserve This Living Fossil | |||||
| "It is believed by eminent scientists that the Chow Chow is an offshoot of primitive species, a kind of living fossil confined to a limited area of the earth and preserving important characteristics." CE Collett, Chowist, c1952 | |||||
| The Chow Chow developed over several thousand years to work and survive in a harsh and unforgiving environment. Within just 100 years in the West, it has risked extinction through exaggeration into a series of caricatures. There is a line between "improving" this most ancient breed and hybridizing it altogether. Participate in this incomparable creation responsibly. | |||||
| Honour This Primordial Truth | |||||
| The Chow Chow was bred to be an all-round working partner. He is not naturally a pampered lap-dog or fluffy teddy bear. Part of him will always remain intractable, un-tameable and independent. He holds his dignity stubbornly sacrosanct and demands to be handled with respect. Don't baby or bully or embarrass him. | |||||
| Respect This Unique Privilege | |||||
| "Their fidelity is of a very different kind from that of our European breeds … a proud 'man to man' loyalty which includes little submission and less obedience. He treats [his master] much more as a colleague, although his bond with him is very much stronger and far less transferable to another person." Konrad Lorenz, Ethologist, c1949 | |||||
| The traditional Chow Chow is a one-man dog, his bond is fierce and eternal. This is a breed particularly sensitive to abuse or abandonment. Anyone taking on a Chow Chow must commit to a life-time of striving to be worthy of such devotion. He cannot lightly be re-homed as an adult without impact to his temperament. You break his trust at your own risk. | |||||
